Recently, research has indicated a possible link between some hormonal contraceptives and STI risk, as well as between oral contraceptives and cervical cancer. No causal relationship has yet been established; however, this research raises important questions for women about STI risk and the use of hormonal contraceptives.
What does this mean for an uninfected woman choosing between contraceptive methods? For an HIV positive woman using birth control?
The issue brief, Hormonal Contraception and HIV: Is there a Link? [PDF, 147KB] put together by RHTP, Gynuity Health Projects, and Ibis Reproductive Health, helps to answer some important questions about the relationship between hormonal contraception and HIV/AIDS based on the information available to date. We hope this information is useful in your research, education, training, and advocacy efforts.
